Ski France this winter

The most famous ski resort in the French Alps is Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. Chamonix is both the oldest and the biggest French winter-sports resort. Site of the first Winter Olympics, held in 1924, Chamonix boasts the world’s highest cable car (12,000 feet). From the top, the view of Mont Blanc, at 15,700 feet, is stunning. Chamonix Ski Resort Visitors to Chamonix can do more than ski, though. There are conferences, a science fair, fishing and hunting, various music and folk festivals, and an alpine museum. An 18-hole golf course will delight golfers, and three movie theaters provide enough [suite...]

Belgian Climber Chloe Graftiaux Dies After Mont Blanc Fall - Climbing

Belgian rock climber and alpinist Chloe Graftiaux died last Saturday after an 1,800-foot (600-meter) fall on l'Aiguille Noire de Peuterey (Black Granite Needle) on Mont Blanc. The 23-year-old Graftiaux, winner of the 2010 Vail World Cup Bouldering event at the Teva Games in June, fell while descending the impressive black granite fin. Climbing unroped on fairly easy terrain, Graftiaux grabbed a block which pulled out, knocking her down the peak. Chloe and her partner were just starting the ultra-classic route Aiguilles de Peuterey Integral. The 15,000-foot-long, 120-pitch route on the [suite...]

Summer & Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc

For the fourth year in a row, I find myself back in Chamonix excited to circumnavigate Mont Blanc with the world’s best “trailers.” I haven’t had my day here but I am feeling in the best shape I have ever been for this world class event. I relocated to Boulder, CO for the past two months to get my sea-level lungs ready for the oxygen deprived air in the Alps. Tony Krupicka has been a regular sidekick for high altitude exploits. It has been a pleasure sharing time on and off the trail with this great athlete. Not only is he a phenomenal runner, but he’s also an exceptional writer and [suite...]

THE FORTIETH FRENCH ASCENT OF MONT BLANC by Jules Verne

I arrived at Chamonix on the 18th of August, 1871, fully decided to make the ascent of Mont Blanc, cost what it might. My first attempt in August, 1869, was not successful. Bad weather had prevented me from mounting beyond the Grands-Mulets. This time circumstances seemed scarcely more favourable, for the weather, which had promised to be fine on the morning of the 18th, suddenly changed towards noon. Mont Blanc, as they say in its neighbourhood, “put on its cap and began to smoke its pipe,” which, to speak more plainly, means that it is covered with clouds, and that the snow, driven upon [suite...]

How to climb a mountain « Robyn's Wanderings

However in the absence of any local mountains it appeared to be the best preparatory training for climbing Mont Blanc available in Bermuda. Perhaps South Shore to Gibbs Hill lighthouse would be a close second but you can’t watch the ‘Food Network’ there. Planning to arrive in France on the 17th of September and going to 3,500mts altitude on the 19th wasn’t one of my better decisions. I have climbed Mont Blanc before but never with such little local preparation. At 4,810 Meters above sea level Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the European Union, although Russia’s Mount Elbrus at [suite...]

Finnish Mountaineers Set up Sauna at Mont Blanc Summit

Last Saturday, the four Finnish men set off to climb Mont Blanc.  Since they need a good weather condition to set up the portable sauna, the men climbed in darkness and were able to reach the summit at dawn at sub-zero temperatures. Quickly, the men set up the portable sauna that uses a customized sauna oven to burn the wood-fire in sub-zero temperature and high altitude.  When they finally finished putting up the small portable sauna, the men stripped to their underwear and enjoyed the sauna and the fantastic view at the summit. Kari Härkönen, one of the Finnish mountaineers said that [suite...]

Thin air and massive views: climbing Mont Blanc

Little did I know how it feels to try and breathe at nearly five thousand meters above sea level.  Little did I know how it feels to look down from the highest point in the European Alps.  Human beings were not designed to survive up there, yet I have joined the faithful following that makes the pilgrimage each summer to the high mountains. I had been eagerly anticipating our trip to the Alps for so long that I could barely endure the interminable wait for the traffic light to change so I could dash across Euston Road to Belgrove Street where my climbing partner Drew and his trusty Toyota [suite...]

[suite...]
